4 STARS

I really enjoyed Tribal Affairs. It was unlike any other book I've ever read. The story is told in kind of third/second person. It's told from the point of view of Dahlia, a genie who is trapped in a locket that Liana wears around her ankle (she has no idea Dahlia is trapped in there). Most of the time the story is read as if it's told in third person, but every once in a while Dahlia will chime in with her opinion or her side of the story and then it sort of reads like second person. I found it a little confusing at first but once the story got started, I read it like Dahlia was telling me a story and then it was smooth sailing from there.

The descriptions of places and people were lush and vivid. I had no trouble picturing in my mind what was going on. I think my favorite part of the story, from a setting point of view, was when they visited the Island of Marid, but I also found their time on The Drunken Maiden interesting (but unsettling) as well.

The romance was slow, sweet, and clean. I will definitely be giving this book to my 12 year old daughter to read. She's never read a genie story either and I know she's going to enjoy all of the fantasy aspects. If you're looking for a story unlike that differs from the majority of the YA market right now, then definitely pick up Tribal Affairs.
