Title: THE JACK
Author: MK Harkins
Genre: Paranormal Romance

What matters more to Archer: saving the woman he loves but can never have, protecting humanity, or avoiding a prison sentence that would stretch for eternity? Archer is a half breed, caught between two opposing heritages - the Jacks, a bloodthirsty race who kills for sport, and the Readers, a docile race trying to save humankind. Two years ago, he betrayed the Readers, though, in a last-minute change of heart, saved them from ultimate destruction. But now he’s all alone, wallowing in unrequited love. Sadie is an Immortal Seer with a dangerous calling: she must hunt down and destroy the last of the vengeful Jacks. But her quirky humor and gentle spirit make her an unlikely fit for the job. Archer is drawn to Sadie’s pure, kindhearted nature, rekindling hope he might not have to live a solitary life, but he has no idea the danger he’s in. When fate forces the mortal enemies to work together, Sadie must determine which side Archer is on, how much of his charm is real, and if she should follow through with her directive: should she kill him or save him?

After thirty minutes in the shower, I still didn’t feel better. A nice cleansing cry would usually lift my spirits, but I couldn’t get the horrible picture of Archer kissing Susie out of my mind. Instead, an ugly cry, along with an abundance of snot and a rip-roaring headache, were the results.

I turned the water off, grabbed a towel, and walked into the bedroom. Eve slept curled in a ball on my bed. “Hey, Eve.” I sat close. Her furry face always soothed my soul. “I’m so glad you’re with me.” She loved it when I scratched under her chin. With a stretch and a yawn, her beautiful green eyes opened. “I need to talk to you about something.” She blinked. “Okay, here goes. I can’t figure out why I’m so upset about Archer.” I wiped my nose with the towel. “I mean, it’s weird. At first, I thought I’d have to kill him. You’d think that would be off-putting, right? But no, my crazy brain liked him right off, even though I tried to deny it. He’s everything I don’t want—bossy and cocky. Oh, and stubborn. It’s almost impossible to change his mind. His mood swings could make anyone want to scream. I never know what he’s thinking because he’s closed off.” I tapped my finger against my lips. “What else? Oh, and he kissed Susie.” I shivered. Eve meowed and rubbed her face on my shoulder. Tears welled again. “No, I will not cry anymore.” I got up and started to change into clean clothes. “Maybe it’s because he’s so handsome?” I pulled a sweater over my head. “No. That couldn’t be it. Ian is just as handsome. Hmm. Perhaps it’s because he makes me laugh, or when he smiles it’s like the best thing in the world. His face lights up, and he has this twinkle in his eyes. Does that sound stupid?” I wrestled with my too-tight jeans and flopped back onto the bed. After tucking a pillow under my head, I whispered, “I think it’s his eyes. When he lets his guard down, even if it’s only for a minute, it feels like I can see right into his soul. His pain, his hopes and fears, and his heart are so pure and vulnerable.” A tear escaped. “Eve, I think I lo—”

Eve jumped, her back arching, and she hissed.

Hunted, shot, and without her memory, eighteen-year-old Ann Baker wakes in shallow water on a deserted Pacific Northwest island. She is soon approached by two young men claiming to be her friends. Something isn’t right, but when gunshots sound, Ann is left with little choice but to allow Devon and Archer to help her escape. Soon she finds herself in their North Bend mountain compound, where the higher evolved humans claim to be mind-readers. While Ann heals, she realizes they believe her to be one of the last and most powerful of all – The Lost One.

She’s welcomed by most with opened arms, but not everyone is happy about her arrival. A jealous adversary has plans for Ann, which spirals the entire Reader community into chaos.

As lies, murder, and betrayal threaten to rip apart the once harmonious mountain dwellers, Ann is thrust into making a decision that could save or devastate not only The Readers, but all of mankind. But there’s just one glitch: by doing so it may require her to make the ultimate sacrifice.
