Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.
Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
4 STARS
Oh where to start with this book. I'm not entirely sure what I expected when I started this book. I kind of had an image of Woodbury from The Walking Dead but that was not the case at all. The world Ms. Redmerski created was horrifying and all too realistic. The world has fallen because of a deadly illness that has ravaged the population, killing off the majority and leaving people shell-shocked and resorting to inhumane ways to survive. There are no laws or consequences, and most men treat women like they are objects to own. It's really terrifying. There's no supernatural element in play here. Ms. Redmerski portrays a very probable but desolate scenario.
Atticus and Thais get just about everything thrown at them. They just want to be left alone but it seemed like every other chapter there was some new threat they had to face. They had people from Lexington hunting them down. They had to deal with would-be rapists taking Thais unawares. They had to find food and safe water to survive. They were on constant alert for cannibals. They go through so much that you think that they will give up. No one can endure so much and keep on persevering, but they somehow found love in this completely devastating world and they cling to each other to survive. They fight for each other.
There's so much more that happens in this book but I don't want to give too much away. It's best that you go into it sort of blindly. The whole time I was reading, my heart was pounding. I wanted these characters to survive and find peace so badly. And that ending! The ending had me in shock and crying. I just...I just can't. I will definitely be marking my calendar and tracking down the days until book 2 is released.
