“Ms. Gow has written a great story, but not only that, she captures real-life subjects and has her characters handle situations with maturity. It’s almost like she wrote simple life lessons within those pages.
Don’t miss out on this spectacular story. ” – Amber Reads

“I seem to have a intense fascination with this author, Kailin Gow. I really enjoy her writing style. This is a YA , horror series… but tends to veer I believe toward a more adult audience. I had instance’s of a laugh out loud moment. I think there is a great story here with many twists…
Bring your silver, crossbows, holy water and knives , because the slaying has begun !” – Tanya Blog
It started when Briony had to move to Wicked Woods, Massachusetts to live with her Great Aunt Sophie after her family disappears on vacation. The woods at the edge of Aunt Sophie’s inn is filled with secrets and inhabitants both seductive and deadly. Among them is a beautiful boy name Fallon who saves her one night in the woods. As Briony gets closer to Fallon, she learns he has a secret, as do most of the residents of Wicked Wood.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
*My review is for book 1, Wicked Woods, only.
3.5 STARS
Wicked Woods was a solid start to a series. It gave me major Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes and made me very nostalgic to lose myself in the series on Netflix.
The concept of living in this old house turned hotel on the outskirts of spooky and dangerous woods is awesome and had the potential for all kinds of creepiness. I've only read book 1 of this series so I'm hoping that the creep-factor is upped with each subsequent book.
The world building was a little weak for me. Briony's aunt teaches her about creatures besides vampires that plague the woods and town they are trying to protect, but she only mentions them in passing. I was hoping for more info on them, specifically the werewolves, since they make an appearance in the book.
With the whole boy drama aside, I really liked Briony's character. She learns how to fight and becomes strong and skilled, and while she is tempted, she doesn't take out her anger at being bullied on Pepper (the token popular girl who bullies her). She doesn't like to kill vampires and when she does, it devastates her. She know who she is and doesn't let anyone walk all over her.
It seemed like the plot revolved a lot around Briony jumping back and forth between two guys and there was a whole lot of insta-love going on. I'm hoping this is just the author laying the foundation down for more solid plot lines for future books. Don't get me wrong; I enjoy a good love story and I even enjoy some sweet and cheesy romance, but I need it to be secondary to the main plot line. I wanted more depth on the supernatural creatures. There's so much potential here for supernatural awesomeness. I'm going to give book 2 a go and hope for more spooks and creatures. I have moderately high hopes!
Kailin Gow loves things that are edgy, cool, bright, exciting, hopeful, glittery, and jaw-droppingly awe-inspiring. She loves writing, reading, and filming stories about people whose journeys take them beyond their boundaries – physically, psychologically, intellectually, and emotionally to arrive a point and a place of inspiration and hope. Her works have been recognized by the leaders in the industry in book publishing and entertainment to be “innovative” and “disruptive”, earning her awards from ALA, The IBPA, and festivals.
