Tour & Giveaway: Thetis by Greg Boose

Thetis
The Deep Sky Saga Book 2
by Greg Boose
Genre: YA Sci-fi Fantasy
Pub Date: 10/8/18
Lost meets The 100 in this action-packed YA science fiction series.

Blind and broken, orphaned teenager Jonah Lincoln reluctantly boards a rescue ship bound for the planet Thetis, but not before it picks up a few more surprising and dangerous survivors from the massacre on the moon Achilles. After regaining his sight, Jonah sees the gated colony on Thetis is just as he feared–cloaked in mystery and under an oppressive rule with no one to trust–and that outside the walls, it’s even worse. Surrounded by terrifying new landscapes and creatures, Jonah and his friends fight to save the colony and restore order to the planet.

Achilles
The Deep Sky Saga Book 1
Young colonists find themselves stranded on an unpopulated moon—and not as alone as they thought—in a series debut from the author of The Red Bishop.

The year is 2221, and humans have colonized a planet called Thetis in the Silver Foot Galaxy. After a tragic accident kills dozens of teenage colonists, Thetis’s leaders are desperate to repopulate. So Earth sends the Mayflower 2—a state-of-the-art spaceship—across the universe to bring new homesteaders to the colony.

For orphaned teen Jonah Lincoln, the move to Thetis is a chance to reinvent himself, to be strong and independent and brave, the way he could never be on Earth. But his dreams go up in smoke when their ship crash-lands, killing half the passengers and leaving the rest stranded—not on Thetis, but on its cruel and unpopulated moon, Achilles.

Between its bloodthirsty alien life forms and its distance from their intended location, Achilles is a harrowing landing place. When all of the adult survivors suddenly disappear, leaving the teenage passengers to fend for themselves, Jonah doubts they’ll survive at all, much less reach Thetis—especially when it appears Achilles isn’t as uninhabited as they were led to believe.

The fourth of six kids, Greg Boose grew up on a large produce farm in northeast Ohio. He received his undergraduate degree from Miami University, and then later received his M.F.A. at Minnesota State University Moorhead where he focused on screenwriting and fiction. He lives in Santa Monica with his two young daughters.

Plains of Exodus Tour Graphic
Plains of Exodus
Genre: Science Fiction
Publisher: Azure Spider Publications
Publication Date: October 31, 2018
As refugees in a vast sprawling empire, mankind must find and fight for a new homeland after Earth's destruction. Plains of Exodus chronicles this epic struggle.
Mankind’s first contact with an extraterrestrial species didn’t exactly go well. The inadvertent destruction of the Earth saw a call go out to the vast and ancient empire for help. Despite the quick response to this plea for aid, the remnants of humanity find themselves refugees in an overcrowded galaxy and at the mercy of an empire whose existence predates mankind’s own existence.
Unwanted and unwelcome, humanity languishes in a dozen massive colony ships around an energy poor star.
As a young smuggler Jonah Mctier is one of those fortunate few who has access to this millennia old realm, and it is he who after fleeing a triad of imperial cruisers discovers the answer to mankind’s dilemma.
In desperation Jonah finds refuge in a parsecs deep dust cloud where he discovers not only a habitable and empty planetary system but one of the most sought after resources in the Milky Way: a spatial conduit. Except this is no ordinary conduit.
Exploitation of this unique and unknown type of spatial gateway offers an alternative to the slow but inevitable descent into extinction for the children of Adam. Key to this bright future is the need to keep their phenomenal find a secret from the resource hungry empire who would take this discovery for themselves and themselves alone.
To complicate matters Jonah discovers that there is more than one of these gateways, and for humanity to be successful in their quest mankind must hold and eventually destroy all of these rare portals.

Jonah didn’t know old Earth, didn’t have parents who grieved for such a loss, and his only real desire at this point in his life was to join his friends on Wild-deck to drink that sphere of dark beer so dearly bought for his birthday.
Well, he’d seen the stars for the first time. It had been worth missing the party, and besides he had received a much better gift that day than just a bellyful of beer and a hangover—he had found Sontule.
Five years had passed since Sontule had come into his possession, and that irascible deckmaster had passed away a couple of years ago. Yes, it was definitely strange how fortune graced some while leaving others untouched. Some had gained fame and ease, what ease could be found on the colony ships, by their looks or skill at amusement—something the holocasts demanded.
That hadn’t been Jonah’s gateway out of poverty. Oh yeah, he was tall enough, and had the blond hair and blue eyes of some long ago Germanic ancestry, but contrary to popular belief the entertainment industry required more than just good looks.
No, his fortune had come from luck and luck only, but this was something he wasn’t going to complain about.
Only half-conscious, his mind skirled about the past—slipping randomly from memories of Sontule’s discovery to life on Alterhome.
The great colony ship was home to over twenty thousand inhabitants. It’s design allowed for half of this, but mankind had seen almost a century in an alien ship whose designers had provided temporary accommodation for considerably less souls and for a limited amount of time.
Alterhome and its eleven siblings had housed what was left of the human race for nearly a century since the exodus, and to this day much of its vast exterior remained unmapped and according to the old deckmaster in dire need of maintenance from those young colonists under her fleshless hand.
Jonah wasn’t the first to discover a ship hidden or forgotten on one of the colony ships. There had been others—not many by any means—, but Jonah’s rare find had been the first in nearly a quarter century.
Then, as if finding the alien craft wasn’t lucky enough, it became clear that the ship was of Abellian design. The Abellians had been extinct for almost fifty thousand years, but their craftsmanship was still valued and much sought after throughout the empire.
The salvage rights had gone to him, of course, and this legal procedure had seen him evolve from faceless nobody to smuggler, one of the envied few who could leave the overcrowded and hopeless life dictated by the colony ships.
This transition from unknown to smuggler seemed to happen overnight—a modern day Cinderella story where it had been his, Jonah Mactier’s, graceful foot which had fitted the glass slipper.
Progression from slipper to castle to happily ever after had not gone quite as smoothly for him. Finding one of these abandoned or forgotten craft meant leaving his old life behind—something he didn’t mind one bit.
Jonah wasn’t stupid. He knew his life was never going to be the same again, but what caught him off-balance was the enormous amount of attention suddenly focused on him—some desired and some most definitely not.
Those who brokered power on Alterhome wanted him to join them, and their suit had been powerful and compelling, as well as being heavily laced with the poison of guilt and duty owed. Others had just wanted his ship, preferably without him, and they were quite willing to use any means necessary to get the Abellian vessel. Those had been the beginnings of exciting times.

About Robert J. Burnett

Robert J. Burnett
After crisscrossing the country on more than one occasion, Robert J. Burnett and his wife Louise are currently living in northern British Colombia where they hope each day that they won’t be burnt up in the massive fires ravaging the province. Coming a close second to these fears are the worries about being eaten by bears. Mosquitoes scare him too.
Rob’s favourite religion is Christianity, but he’s never met a druid or a pagan he didn’t like. That said, he doesn’t like them if they’re smelly. Same with bears.
His fondest wish is to be abducted by aliens and taken to their home-world where he will miraculously return to his mid-twenties and be given super powers.
His music likes could be said to be a bit eclectic, ranging from classical to Celtic, especially those composed by non-smelly druids or pagans.
Voted in high school as most likely to lose all his teeth before sixty, he can proudly state that this has not happened as he still retains twelve. It is this ferocious smile, he believes, that scare off most bears.
Today he lives a productive life of non-work, listening to Ancient Astronaut and Hangar 51 shows, a hobby he has cultivated in his expectation of being abducted and taken off-planet. At least he won’t lose his job for failing to show up for work.
As a father to four sons, Rob fervently hopes that all his children will breed and produce offspring who in their turn will support him in his dotage.

Tour: Blythe of the Gates by Leah Erickson

Blythe of the Gates
by Leah Erickson
Genre: Historical Fiction

Can the gates of perception be bypassed?

A rash love affair with a member of the Irish Mafia catapults Luna Mulkerrins into scandal, murder, scorn and decadent friendships in Ragtime Manhattan. Escaping from the blaze of publicity, a new Luna emerges: Blythe of the Seven Gates. Her meteoric rise as a magician leads to fame, vaudeville, silent movies and the notoriety of a damaging court case. Can Luna reclaim her reputation and reinvent herself as an independent woman of the time?

From Leah Erickson, author of The Brambles, winner of the Crime Fiction award from the IPA.

Covered in cracked, brown leather and very old, the box had rows of hammered brass tacks along its edges, the lock held shut with a heavy latch of blackened metal. Only the Magician was allowed to use the key, and he kept it in his breast pocket at all times.

Luna knew about the faded red velvet lining. And she knew how the antique metal hinges creaked when he opened it. She knew about the ancient smell of mildewed newspaper, the smell of trapped life, the smell of time passed by …

“Luna. Open your eyes and look at it!”

Why the Magician did this to her, she did not know. Some nights when he was in a particularly wicked mood, he'd take the box down from the top of his closet and make Luna look inside, even though she turned away, and shut her eyes to it.

This made him laugh. “Girl, I am your husband. Listen to me! Look at it.”

But it was unbearable, to look straight into it, because it hurt. Looking straight into the thing was like looking straight into the sun; when she shut her eyes, she saw pulsing blood, red and floating orbs …

“Look.”

To look inside the box was to feel dissolution, deep down in her very center, spreading out and out until she had no more edges to her. But once she did look, it was so hard to look away again.

Leah Erickson is the author of the novel "The Brambles" (2017) and "Blythe of the Gates." She is the recipient of the 2018 Independent Press Award and the Independent Book Award. Her short fiction has appeared in many magazines and journals in print and online, including The Fabulist, Pantheon Magazine, The Saint Ann's Review, Eclectica, The Coachella Review, and many more. Sparks  leapt  into  the  air  as  the  metal  blades  of  heavy  axes  fought  against  unyielding  stone.  Endless  rain  poured  down  the  mountainside  sweeping  through  the  valleys  and  picking  up  speed  and  volume  as  it  flooded  rivers  and  lakes  and  scythed  through  the  forests  before  rushing  into  the  ever-widening  quarries  that  erupted  like  boils  on  the  landscape.  The  crack  of  whips  echoed  around  the  hills  as  hideous  creatures,  twisted  and  warped  like  demons  from  a  nightmare,  bent  double  under  the  urgent  force  of  their  masters  driving  them  deeper  and  deeper  into  the  ground.  Many  drowned,  dragged  under  the  rising  water  by  their  heavy  clothes  but  still  they  were  driven  on.  Their  masters  were  frenzied  in  their  desire  for  that  which  history  had  long  foretold  was  hidden  out  of  sight.

Scurrying  amongst  the  slaves,  leather-clad  shamans  were  protected  from  the  worst  of  the  rain  but  were  soaked  through  nonetheless  by  their  insistence  on  dropping  to  the  bottom  of  each  new  hole  and  listening  intently  to  the  rocks  and  tree  roots  that  were  being  unearthed.  Each  one  would  pull  out  a  bone  horn  and  place  it  to  the  wall  and  listen  intently  whilst  all  digging  around  them  stopped  and  the  workers  fell  quiet.  Only  the  sound  of  falling  rain  and  distant  thunder  interrupted  the  silence.  Inevitably,  they’d  shake  their  heads  and  look  to  the  sky  in  anguish,  and  the  digging  would  resume.

As  days  blurred  into  months  into  years  and  eventually  into  centuries,  the  race  known  as  the  Shrunken  dug  deeper  into  the  bowels  of  their  world  scarring  its  landscape  forever.  Rivers  were  dammed  and  diverted  and  forests  plundered  for  their  timber.  Not  a  hill  went  untouched  nor  a  valley  left  unmined  in  their  insatiable  quest.  Until  one  day  a  shaman,  crouched  on  his  knees  at  the  foot  of  a  deep  well  hidden  in  the  shadows  of  an  ancient  oak  tree,  his  horn  pressed  firmly  to  the  sodden  clay  wall,  sighed  and  closed  his  eyes.  Silently,  he  stood  tall,  and  this  time  he  didn’t  shake  his  head.  Instead,  he  nodded  almost  imperceptibly  to  the  solitary  young  miner  who  stood  alone  as  the  only  other  witness  to  what  was  about  to  happen.  The  miner  lay  down  his  axe  and  reached  into  his  belt  for  a  smaller,  more  delicate  trowel.  He  took  to  his  knees  and  slowly,  painstakingly  teased  away  the  mud  ignoring  the  muddy  water  and  nervous  sweat  that  ran  down  his  face.  Eventually,  he  took  a  step  back  and,  along  with  the  shaman,  looked  down  upon  the  oily  black  glass  that  shimmered  even  in  the  half-light  of  the  storm.

The  shaman  turned  and  walked  slowly  away,  stopping  only  to  whisper  a  message  to  one  of  the  guards  at  the  entrance  to  the  hole.  Behind  him,  the  swish  of  a  sword  followed  by  a  deep  moan  and  wet  thud  reassured  him  that  the  only  witness  to  the  discovery  had  been  taken  care  of.  It  had  been  found.

Tour & Giveaway: Red Harvest by Patrick C. Greene

Red Harvest
The Haunted Hollow Chronicles #1
by Patrick C. Greene
Genre: Horror

In the epic tradition of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Jonathan Maberry, a chilling new masterwork of small-town evil, centuries-old traditions, and newly-risen terror…

Red Harvest

Every year at harvest time, something strange and wonderful happens in the sleepy farm community of Ember Hollow. It comes alive. Truckloads of pumpkins are sent off to be carved into lanterns. Children scramble to create the creepiest, scariest costumes. Parents stock up on candy and prepare for the town’s celebrated Pumpkin Parade. And then there is Devil’s Night . . .

But this year, something is different. Some of the citizens are experiencing dark, disturbing visions. Others are beginning to wonder if they’re losing their minds, or maybe their souls. One newly sober singer with the voice of a fallen angel is tempted to make a deal that will seal his fate. And one very odd boy is kept locked in a shed by his family—for reasons too horrible to imagine . . .

Whatever is happening to this town, they’re going to make it through this Halloween. Even if it kills them . . .

“Trick or treat! Rotten meat! That is what we want to eat!” One of the troupe of tweens was out of harmony.

“Hm.” Lola, costumed in a short leather nun’s habit, smiled and saluted the kids with her wine glass.

She was decidedly not mortified by this variation of the traditional rhyme, and only mildly amused, more interested in the TV party a few rooms away. “Well, no rotten meat I’m afraid, but I think I still have a few…”

She twisted almost sideways and presented a near-empty candy bowl from just inside, dumping the last of the treats into the bags and buckets. “Here you go, kiddies!”

Lola ignored the disappointed expressions the kids cast at her and at one another, her bleary gaze drawn to the figure standing across the street, just outside a vague circle of street light.

The figure, wearing an odd costume of rainbow fright wig, Lone Ranger–style eye mask, and an oversized brown raincoat, wasn’t moving, except for his shoulders, which rose and fell as if from suppressed laughter. He hunched over and covered his mouth with both hands, like a toddler who had just stolen a cookie. Did he think she couldn’t see him? How silly.

“Is this all you got, lady?” asked the kid in the…whichever superhero wore black tights with green trim. She had stopped trying to keep up.

“Um, well…” She looked inside again. “No more candy,” she said. “But how about this for your chaperone?”

From the four canisters of silly string beside the candy bowl—in the event of a prank war—she held one over the heads of the children, to offer it to the man on the street. But he was gone.

“Where’s your grown-up?” she asked.

The kids turned to see what she meant. “What grown-up? We’re old enough to be without,” explained a rubber-worm-infested zombie, quite indignantly.

Her wine glass was empty. She didn’t care about the funny skulker anymore.

“Okeydoke, then,” she said. “Have at it!” She tossed the silly string at the group, then half waved, half shooed, until they shuffled away. Before closing the door, she decided to blow out the jack-o’-lantern.

Lola re-wined her glass and started back to the den to rejoin her friends in giving old horror movies the MST3K treatment. She was stopped by the doorbell.

She stepped to the door, unsteady on her spike heels. “Sorry! All out! Happy Halloween!”

She moved to walk away but stopped upon hearing a giggle—silly yet eerie—just outside the door. “Hey!” she shouted. “You better not be TPing our lawn out there!”

The doorbell rang again.

“Okay!” Lola grabbed a can of silly string. “I warned you!”

She yanked open the door and poised the canister, finding only blowing leaves, on and all around the front stoop.

She listened for the sound of giggling or leaves crunching under running feet, bracing for a good hearty “Boo!” as well.

“Ding dong ditch,” she muttered. “Not even a flaming bag of doggy doo. Kids these days…”

She closed the door—and felt the icy tingle of intuition. Something was very, very wrong.

She turned fast.

It was the man from across the street, now less than two feet away.

He had entered through the rear kitchen door.

The fright wig he was wearing, vaguely haloed by the hallway, did its job. From there down, it only got worse.

His Lone Ranger–style mask framed eyes filled with something like joy—but more like hopeless insanity. His face was white, as if bleached.

Then there was the blood.

Streams of it ran down gaunt cheeks to cracked smiling lips from the staples that held the mask on.

The figure raised a meat cleaver with a blade the size of a notebook.

Lola’s heart skipped a beat, until she saw that the weapon was mere plastic—a toy. Lola smiled, issuing a relieved, “Whew!”

“So funny, Greg.” She leaned forward to look more closely at him. “Where’s the ol’ ball and chain?”

As she reached for his mask, the figure stepped back from her grasp. He lowered the cleaver and slid the toy plastic blade—merely an improvised sheath—off of a very shiny, very real butcher knife blade.

The oversized trick-or-treater displayed the implement.

“Oh, my God, Greg.” Lola rolled her eyes and raised both middle fingers.

The trickster slashed the knife in a sideways arc, severing the fingers.

She was too breathless to scream, trying to reconcile the sight of her shortened digits and angry that Greg had taken his little joke this far.

Not-Greg squatted to gather the fingers and drop them into his treat bag.

Trying to back away from her own ruined hand, Lola fell like a toddler onto her rump, sucking breath for a scream she would never have time to release.
